Spitting bile with a hint of a smile, Denis Leary brought the underground rantings of Bill Hicks into the mainstream

Agreed. Pugh existed to have boobs and kill herself at the prospect of a life without Oppendick, and Blunt was stuck playing Generic Bad Wife (Drunk Variant) for the whole movie, with the exception of that one scene where she just fillets the prosecutor.

Yeah, this is clearly Gosling vs. Downey for Supporting Actor. Gosling has zero shot in Lead Actor.

I know these lists are destined to annoy people, but only 3 women on your list - there have been more albums by female comedians that deserve to be on your list. Whoopi Goldberg’s Broadway concert definitely and LaWanda Page, Moms Mabley, Margaret Cho, Gilda Radner, Sandra Bernhard, Julia Sweeney all put out records

It’s a shame there aren’t more women on this list. At the very least there should be an honorable mention for Carol Burnett and Phyllis Diller.

It’s 17.

Glad to see that Stan Freberg has not been completely forgotten. My dad used to play his albums fairly often, but he seemed to be completely unknown among my friends. “How can you never have heard The Old Payola Roll Blues?”, 8 year old me wondered.

Raise a glass for a those with the courage to fight the real enemies, internal and external.  RIP.

I was just reading a great quote from her where she said that she didn’t kill her career - she killed the career that the studios wanted for her, and it’s the most rock and roll thing I’ve ever heard.

I won’t go so far as to say this list is invalid without a Guy Maddin entry, but I am going to imply it.

Now playing

Great call. “Tales of the Gimli Hospital” was huge on the college/midnight movie circuit and for awhilel) it seemed as if Maddin was going to inherent David Lynch’s crown of indie weirdness.

The Sweet Hereafter is a real gut punch of a movie. I saw it in our local “art house” movie theater (RIP) when it came out, then saw it another 3 times in the theater. Beautiful and haunting and sad. Mychael Danna’s score & Sarah Polley’s singing on the soundtrack, the whole package is just perfect. To this day, one

And without a single mention of Lake Placid in the Maine category?

I saw “Ishtar” on its initial release. It’s a genial, Bob-and-Bing road movie. I enjoyed it. For some reason, people reviewed the budget rather than the film. Is the money on the screen? Absolutely not. But my ticket cost the same price as one for any other contemporaneous film.

Ishtar is not bad at all. It’s funny. It’s a Hope/Crosby road movie, and unlike that series, they spent money actually GOING on the road to their locations. The too-old leads lean into their too-oldness, and their lack of hipness - and the awful songs (shout-out to Paul Williams) are hilariously bad.

I love seeing a reasonable, and intelligently-presented, contrarian take. Even when I end up unconvinced, I feel like my horizons have been expanded at least a little.

When I first realized this wasn’t a slideshow, I almost shed a tear.

The books featuring Farley “Fudge” Hatcher and his family (“Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing”, “Superfudge”, “Doublefudge”, etc.) also feature male protagonists but are written in a more humorous breezy style and less of the After School Special lecturing that some of her books fell into.

Why go that far back when Johnny Depp is right there?

Take out “Darby O’Gill” and add “The Secret of Roan Inish”
