I didn’t before, but now that you mention it, the game does have overtones that go beyond the usual RPG trope of sidequests that imply that nobody does anything and everyone just stands around waiting for the player character to solve all their problems, from saving the world to bringing in the laundry.

When I was younger, I had more time, fewer responsibilities, and less money. I tended to spend more time with the games I owned to get more “value” out of them, whether that meant grinding through on a higher difficulty than I could handle or filling time by hunting for achievements.

I’ve noticed non-alpha Machoke tend to just mill about and pose when my character is around, and the odd thing is I could have sworn that they used to attack me earlier in the game? Machop still attack if I wander around out of cover...so I wonder why Machoke have accepted me as one of their own?
