You can actually use the BMW M240i as an equivalent car to the Z4 40i. It uses the 335hp B58 motor. It does the 1/4-mi in 12.7s@111mph.

A manual 340i can hit sub 5s 0-60 times. Paired with the ZF 8HP, they’ve been able to hit 4.5 or less. Take note that the version of the B58 in the F30/F32 are the 320hp versions. The version in the Z4 will be the 335hp version that’s currently in the 540i and the M240i. The 540i has been clocked 0-60 at 4.7s with the…
You must have a tall boy! I currently have an F30 3 series and I can’t imagine anyone under 5'6" not being able to fit comfortably in the back. Unless you’re 6'5" and stealing the rear legroom.
You’re not the only one. That doesn’t mean it’s the most relevant spec.
Oh OK. You’re a design engineer and you’ve owned all the engines. Yet you complain about peak horsepower numbers.
If you’ve owned cars with a VQ37VHR motor and the N55/B58, you’d know peak horsepower numbers only tell half the story. There is so much more power all throughout the rev range.
Uh, have you seen cars lately? The 3 series is a compact luxury sedan. I mean, I guess if you’re comparing cars from the 80s, yeah the 3 is pretty big. But we are in the year 2018. If the 3 is huge, then how big is the A4? The 5 series? The S class? Those are all bigger. The new Supra should be similar in size to the…
Yeah, I bet they’ll make the steering and suspension much better on the new 3 series as well, just to torture enthusiasts. I might just end up getting an M3 although I feel like that’s a waste of money for what I need.
The G37 is in between a compact and mid-sized luxury sedan. It’s probably the biggest out of all the competing compact luxury sedans (3, C, A4). I’m sure it’s smaller than a G37 but probably bigger than a 3.
All other reviews say cabin comfort is good on the G70. I wouldn’t make such definitive claims without having driven the car at least. The modern BMW F30 cars are way too compliant. The older E90 and E46 BMWs were considered “too stiff” or “too loud” by a lot of people. Enthusiasts still loved them though.
Cadillacs are ugly inside and out. That’s the main problem with them. They also used cheap parts. Otherwise they drove well. That’s about ALL they did well. It’s pretty insulting to compare the G70 to the CTS/ATS. The G70 is a handsome car with what looks like a very nice interior. Probably nicer than my current F30…
Uh, the Z4 is getting the ZF 8HP as the only transmission option. The new 3 series is also going automatic only in the U.S. (except maybe the M3 if we’re lucky). Care to tell us more about BMW’s philosophy?
The N55 motor is actually proven to be pretty reliable so far. They made huge improvements to it since the N54. The B58 is an evolutionary design and there’s not much reason to think it won’t be relatively reliable.
The Z4 will definitely be ZF 8HP only. And the Supra is also using the same B58 motorand ZF 8HP transmission. No manuals for either. They’ll be using almost identical if not identical drivetrains.
Z4 is ZF 8HP only. No DCT. No 6 speed.
Actually, the Z4 and Supra are using the higher output version of the B58. I think it was either 365 or 380hp.
It’s way too much to ask of a 400hp coupe in modern times to weigh much less than 3400lbs without costing a lot of money from using exotic materials.
I meant overall, not just interior quality. Neither Audi or Lexus really concentrates on driving. Audi still has a pretty big edge on technology. Lexus has interior quality. I personally think Audi styling is better, if boring.
Trust me, i’ve been following this news very religiously for the past 6 months. It’s assured the next gen 3 series will not have a manual in the U.S. Only the very small displacement engines available in Europe will offer it (316/318 etc.). If you want a manual BMW 3 series, you had better go get one soon.
Oh I meant top of the pack of Asian luxury brands.
