My stepfather was just like that. A really, genuinely caring guy. He would never achieve much, but he cared.
But he drank. And he was an asshole when drunk, which was >90% of the time that he came home.
I did stumble into an opportunity, once. I was 19 years old, and my girlfriend of the time was 18. She drunkenly explained once that she wanted to experiment with me and her best friend - right there and then. Both girls were up for it. I was too scared/daunted.
We just carried on drinking.
