FGM isn't a Muslim thing. It's prevalent in various cultures, mostly African, but across religious lines. And within those cultures, there are usually women who fight back — including those who fight back using Islamic, Christian, or other religious rhetoric.

Technically Christian law condemns women as second class citizens too, yet Western women have managed to get past that. Condemning a religion is not the answer here.

That's preposterous. Anyone who makes broad statements about the lifestyle of "Muslim women" that would encompass everyone from rural Somalia to Kuala Lumpur to London doesn't know the first thing about Islam or women. If you think that 1 billion people can be reduced to an undifferentiated monolith, we can't have a

I'm a college professor and I have taught many many many Muslim women. So, no, this doesn't hold true for all. Some didn't choose to cover up at all, were not forced into marriage and um, obviously were in school.

Don't you think that's a massive generalization? The things you're talking about are awful, but they are also regional and not exclusive to Muslims by any means.

Here's one of my favorite parts of your link:

uhhhhh you do realize that the Muslim religion/culture is like super duper diverse, right? Not to say that I think any Muslim women need "saving" but ... yeah.

It's the idea that all Muslim women are oppressed. It goes along with everyone assuming all Muslim women wear burkkas (worldwide a very small percentage do) when it comes to the hijab (head scarfs) it's the belief that all Muslim women are forced to wear them. While some Muslim women live in culture that socially

Agreed. Heinz 57 and A1 go nowhere near my steak. Maybe a burger. But I'm definitely putting that shit on my fries.

didn't that happen on Nashville?

So, objectifying and scrutinizing a woman's appearances is bad unless that woman got plastic surgery that (the white) people (who read Jezebel) think is self-hating? Had Chen gotten this surgery, dyed her hair blond, and changed her name to "Betty Draper" I might buy the idea that she's some neurotic, self-loathing,

I kind of feel that way about fake food. I love it and I want to play with it. I was at this cavernous furniture store a while ago, and they had a big room set up with all kinds of different tables and place settings. It wasn't just fake fruit, they even had fake sushi for the Asian style setup. I was in heaven.

The picture I got from the headline was that Justin Theroux had mementos of his own brushes with STDs, and that he periodically wandered among them nostalgically — either singing "Ah Yes, I Remember It Well" from Gigi, or "Those Were The Good Ole' Days" from Damn Yankees. I hadn't quite decided.

I love those old wax medical models! Justin Theroux, I'm available and I will not only allow you to keep those, but I will make room for them above our mantle. (No seriously, I made a side trip to Italy just to go to two different museums where they had huge collections of the wax medical models. Bologna is a lame

John Legend is totally right, though. I mean, I wouldn't date an idiot. Surely YOU wouldn't want to, either. So that seems fair to me.

True. I find it strange how much more men seem to "nest" than women.

"Understand" might be overstating it. It got to the point where I could watch the game without being confused, but I still didn't fully grasp all the rules or sometimes why there were stoppages, etc. I'd imagine that it's kind of how most people watch hockey. You get it, but the nuances aren't all there.

Best response ever to something like this. Love her.
