I think you expanded really well on what I was thinking. In the case of SotN, leveling got me more invested in a newer kind of Castlevania experience that I didn't even know I wanted; in something like Godzilla, it's just the quickest way to say "hey! Progress! Good job! Don't ever stop playing!".
