If anyone / thing is to blame, it’s Nascar themselves, for racing at Daytona & Talladega.

You gotta thank Nascar and the Car Of Tomorrow (COT) they designed about ten years back.  One of the changes was moving the driver’s seat 4 or 5 inches towards centerline, along with a number of other safety advances to the chassis and driver compartment.

Wilson’s hit was so random.  

That was awful.

When I saw them shoot off the extinguishers, my first thought was, if he was conscious, would Newman be able to breathe with all that dust in the air.

This style of racing (Nascar restrictor-plate racing) only happens at Daytona and Talladega. Because of the size of the tracks, the cars would reach speed upwards of 220+ mph if they weren’t using a restrictor plate that reduced the flow of air to the engine.
