That’s not a bad idea, though I worry about Leafs (Leaves?) long term since the battery is air cooled. Batteries are pretty sensitive to temperature.
Oh they’re definitely not on par yet, but they’re getting closer every year. And some people are willing to pay more for those EV advantages too, so they don’t necessarily have to be the same or less than a gas car.
Exactly. We just bought a house with a garage, and my thinking is along the same lines. It just makes too much sense for us not to have at least one EV or plug-in hybrid- likely in a few years when she’s ready to replace her CX-5. Hopefully the cost discrepancy comes down by then.
Hey I agree - I think I’ll always have at least 1 gas car, even if it’s a coupe for the weekends. But for day to day commuting/errands/etc. an EV is probably in my future as well. After riding in a model 3 it’s hard not to see the appeal of EVs in general, especially if they keep improving.
The fact is that even setting aside the whole “green” thing, EVs today have a lot of advantages over a gas car for a lot of people. They’re not quite on par with gas cars yet, mostly due to cost and range, but that’s getting better each year. For example, the Leaf doubled its range from the 1st generation to the 2nd,…
That’s interesting - I’d guess Rivian would pay around the same at best(costs have come down since then, but GM has a much better negotiating position). If so that ~$30k just on the battery pack. Doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for the rest of it, let alone actually making a profit.
January? Dammit, I was seriously considering canceling Prime at the end of this year. Looks like they got me hooked for 2019 now. Though with them canceling the show after that there’s not much to keep me around after that. This was the only show on there that got me excited.
“the largest being a 180 kW battery pack” - slight correction, this should be 180 kWh. Kilowatt hours are a unit of energy capacity, kW refers to power.
Maserati hasn’t known what it wants to be for a very long time, this is not a recent phenomenon. They just can’t seem to execute in any one plan fully. The recent direction could’ve worked, but the cars weren’t great. Who really wants a more expensive Alfa Romeo with even worse build quality?
Agreed. It would be nice to have an article that better explains what drives efficiency on EVs. Other than the obvious stuff shared with ICE cars like aero and rolling resistance, what are the critical components on an EV that affect it?
The fun answer? Just take then end off, reinforce the bottom end, add a loading mechanism, and there you go!
Seriously, this is burying the lede. Hopefully that charging rate spreads to future VW EVs.
That’s good to hear. Realized after I posted that you’ve put a lot about this car on oppo, should’ve checked first.
Nice! I’m considering one myself and was gonna go with the blue gray color, but that looks pretty damn sweet...
For that use case I think you answered your own question - I don’t think an electric car is really viable yet. I don’t think of superchargers as something you should commonly use, more of a backup solution for when you’re too far from home to charge. If you’re regularly doing 200+ miles a day you’re looking in the…
So much this. There’s a lot of benefits to a Tesla, but this for me it the killer feature. If you need to take a trip you can pretty easily do so, even with a bit of inconvenience for charging times. Doing the same in a Bolt would be stressful as hell relying on third party charging infrastructure and all the…
I think eventually everyone will have to build EVs on their own platform - just look at all the benefits that gives to Tesla and the I-Pace. But sharing a platform likely has a big cost advantage to that strategy, so while it negates some of the packaging freedoms an EV gives you (and likely limits some of the…
Do we have any idea of how the nuclear propulsion on this works? I hope it isn’t like the project pluto weapon...
Unfortunately I think that number will climb as they dig through the rubble. I saw another source (I think it was BBC) that had a quote from a first responder talking about “dozens” dying.
