My privately held employer has to tolerate the whims of the owner’s daughter every three years or so when she gets bored and wants to pretend she earns the salary she gets from her vague but important sounding title.

Because for many/most people, it’s difficult to “just get another job.”

That’s a great idea if you’re an engineer, chemist, or someone else with difficult to replace hard to learn skills. If you are an average joe you will at best get the same deal somewhere else.

Even if you have that option, many private companies are startups whose only purpose is to develop one product that makes them an acquisition target for a larger company.

You do know that industry wages are pretty consistent across a region, yes? That is one reason that unionization increases wages even for non-union shops.

I am always wary of the “Never laid anyone off” claim. SC Johnson makes that claim. They hire tons of temps so they never lay anyone off, the temp agency does.
