Most of the takes I’ve seen calling this lame seem to come from people who seem committed to some dated “LOL, D&D is for neeeeeerrrrds” bit. This looks fun, it looks self-aware in a way that’s not obnoxious.

Part of the reason it did was because HBO Max was starved for original content, so they ended up giving the show a second season before season 1 had even aired (but after the completed season 1 had sat on a shelf for years.)
