He wouldn't go down to King's Landing to take the throne, he'd go "recruit" for his army and attack Winterfell after they'd been in battle for a while, depleted and exhausted. 

Wights: those crusty-ass dead, decomposing blue-eyed skeletons, like the one that was captured in Season 7 to be shown to Cersei & co. in King’s Landing.

Not only that, but the show is full of nods to the tactics of military diversion, and how effective a well-planned diversion can be. It hearkens back to Robb’s battles.
