A little of column A, little of column B. Even in Asser's quasi-hagiography of him it's admitted that Alfred was known as a sinner in his younger days. Prone to drunken bouts of screwing whoever took his fancy. His pain from Crohn's disease and various other 'tests of faith' are twisted (probably by the author, as

This is what I like about Bernard Cornwell's take on Alfred the great. Having read Asser's life of Alfred, you really do get a sense of a king who has more than a few flaws hidden under the praise for him being saintly and above all extremely intelligence. It's nice to see the adaptation is being equally pointed in

I should probably stop assuming that I'm the weakest link in the story's chain, really.

This episode was fucking stellar. The direction was absolutely perfect right down to the war scene. It absolutely blew me away.

I still don't UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT IT :(

Just about lost it at 'some effeminate dope fiend with an inexplicable shirt.'
Dead on. I'm giving it two more episodes.

Man, I thought I'd gone insane for a second.

IIRC, heels were originally worn by Spanish men to make them seem taller. All the rage during the dandy era too. Heels for women are a relatively new thing by comparison.

I hate you for even suggesting this, because it's so stupid it has to be true.

Does anyone else have the feeling the writers made darlene purposely obnoxious because it'd make even more sense that she was his annoying kid sister or is it just me?

Man, there's nothing on TV these days.

What about his poor guitar?

That's a perfectly structured rollercoaster of a comment, man. You've earned my eternal trust and respect.

Same here. Really disturbing.

I don't understand why, but so do I.

Do you think there's a massive plot twist coming where it's revealed that Alan actually IS illaria?

Well yes, but there's been absolutely no clue in order to justify that. If that's the case, then this show is worse than I thought. 'Show, don't tell' requires actually showing, right?

I don't understand why Peter's gone insane again. What the fuck is happening in this show? I feel like I keep falling asleep during important plot points.

Having been a bartender at various points too: Holy fuck I can relate to that.
Whenever I go to the pubs I used to work at people come up to me and try to have a chat too. I probably talked to you for two minutes during a slack period six months ago. I see fucking 300 faces every night and you expect me to remember how

Five minutes in right now. Worked in a coat check for two years. The amount of people who think I'll remember their coats without them taking their ticket was astounding. 'It's your job!'
