What a great read. I have been a VW guy most of my life, and the day I lost my 01 Golf to a drunk driver was a very sad day indeed. Even though it wasn’t the fastest or most powerful car out there by any stretch of the imagination, it was a pure joy to drive. I really miss it.

Fun fact: Charles Rolls was the first Briton to die in an aviation accident in a powered aircraft when the tail broke off of his Wright Flyer in 1910. Rolls was just 32 years old.
This was mid-70s. Long time ago....
The closest I ever got to this was when my brother and I, about the same age and flying unaccompanied, were allowed to throttle up the engines of a 727 when pushing back from the gate. Cockpit visits, when they are even allowed, are much different these days.

How hard would it be to implement starting lights inside the cars themselves? The only downside I can think of would be the drivers having their heads down at the start rather then up and ahead of them.
