Couldn’t they scale back their budget a bit? Not all great games have to break the bank. Right now it seems, outside of the indie scene, it’s becoming a race to spend more money than the other guys, which seems like a business model destined to collapse.

Polygon had a piece a couple days ago that made essentially the same argument you are making, but they threw in some counter-examples very quickly without bothering to discuss them.
