Free castering nose wheels cause issues during long taxis in cross winds. Several Cirrus have had brake fires due to this, causing significant damage to the planes. Haven’t heard about Diamonds going crispy, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it has happened to them too.

They work fairly well even if they look like hell sometimes like above. The Katana was derived from a tail dragger motor glider so in order to keep it easy to afford to develop they decided to forgo redesigning large portions of the front end and rudder controls in order to make room for a steering nose wheel.
