And many other classics began in the 90's. Ghost in the Shell. Evangelion. Gundam. I feel like the 90's anime style worked quite well for serious stories. The current style does lead to some smoother action scenes, but that will never discount the action scenes in anime of the past.

Actually, the second and especially the third film really cut down on the CG. It’s still there for the fights, but the dramatic scenes are entirely in traditional animation.
