The exemption is more detailed than “if you work at a desk.” Many positions should not legally qualify for exemption, such as Administrative Assistants and IT support roles.

“working at a desk” is not what classifies a position as exempt. As smrknd2 said, its very common for companies to misclassify (illegaly) an hourly position as exempt so that they dont have to pay overtime.
