Since we’re just going by a single article (at least I am) it’s anyone’s guess, almost. However when I read this:

Yeah, after one of the other replies I read other articles and see that the author of this article misquoted Paladino, making what he apparently said much less controversial; seems like a strange thing to do given the whole reason for the article.

I typically just pop whatever falls on the floor up into my mouth, figuring any germs that have newly arrived will either be an extra (albeit minimal) nutritional source or a potential boost (albeit minimal) to my immune system.

No one involved in this said the person was fired - just a bunch of Me-Too Media sources repeating each other used that term because they ALL want to suggest the woman was punished for her racist statement(s).
