Was the concept of patching console games a thing prior to the previous gen (PS3/360)? With the PS2 it did not have the hard drive standard, and I recall at least one title (Crimson Skies) on the Xbox having some nasty bugs.

Technically, any dumpster that is served by a private company is private property so diving in the US is pretty much forbidden (the freegans found that out first). That being said, unless a store owner sees you they probably won't call the cops.
