Algebra is more than just arithmetic. Showing work is demonstrating your thought process. It helps you learn step by step procedures and to think logically. Most people accept what is displayed on their calculator and have no idea how to find the answer. These people also can’t comprehend that they are wrong.

I taught all of this before common core. It is called Basic Math.
