Xenogears as a game has some serious problems. But the soundtrack is fantastic. Go re-listen to “Steel Giant” and “Emperor of Darkness”. Maybe throw in “Night of Fire”. I bet your opinion changes.

I think almost all of this is right, but Mario Land 2 was a huge graphical upgrade from Mario Land. The art styles are completely different.
