The rear was modeled after one of the earlier concept drawings.
It did debut at $39,980. The interior of the concept was way cooler on the concept. I’m biased, but I think they did a good job on the car overall.
As far as concepts go, I think the 986 production model wasn’t as far away from the original design compared to most concept cars. There’s a guy who took a Boxster S and made it into a similar prototype. New wheels, custom bumper, lowering kit.....not bad.
You can probably get this one for $12,000 if you bargain.
Are we going to find out ten years from now that Bosch was using very small people to drive the cars, hidden away in the trunk so that it appeared the car was driving itself?

Don’t all (most?) new drop-tops allow you to operate the roof at speeds under ~20 mph? One of the first things I upgraded in my 986 Boxster was a relay that allowed me to open/close the top while I was moving.
