No, you don’t want to use hot water b/c you want any bits of grease or oil to congeal and solidify so it doesn’t stick to the sides of your pipes. The disposal itself doesn’t generate any heat.

Well, it isn’t that scientific. A couple of potatoes, no problem. A dozen? Be careful. It’s just actually thinking for one minute about what you are doing and where that food material has to go. 

Nah, it depends on your pipes and sewer. My mom has been putting that stuff down the disposal for 50 years w/o a problem. Other people though have lots of problems with things getting clogged. The main thing is to make sure you run enough water to get what you are grinding out to the sewer.

The problem isn’t exactly the peels, but the quantity vs. amount of water used to flush them out of your pipes.
