I don't know if you *absolutely* need one, but they would probably not let you off in most foreign ports. Highly recommend you get one though, even if you don't want to participate in the sanctioned excursions exploring the destinations are a fun part of the experience.

We have alot ot make the ships safer. Bad things happen on ships sometimes, but we have taken a lot of measures to prevent that kind of thing. It was a painful time for the industry as a whole, and I cant imagine what it was like for those cruisers. No one wants to have to vacation like that....

I know the Carnival Splendor leaves out of NYC area certain times of the year. ( When its warmer ) and the Carnival Pride leaves out of Baltimore in the warmer times of the year. Both are nice ships and a lot of fun!

Yeah, in years past I understand there was a better relationship between airlines and the cruises. I dont work that side so I cannot intelligently comment on the package deals they offer which include airfare.
