I’m not even casually familiar with most of this stuff, I just recall that for years it would pop up with some regularity on the news that UK military acquisitions had been made more expensive than they needed to be because of special modifications, leading to cost overruns and maintenance bottlenecks and so-on.

I suppose the UK govt will add some non-standard bullshit to the spec which favours some british supplier of military widgets and drives up the price. They like doing that.

as I said: “Slightly”. Though they are also more likely to pay lip service to the pro choice position and it varies from one politician to another. There’s political opportunism involved, too. The lure of sometimes staking out the opposite territory to your opponents.

Rest assured, in Northern Ireland there is plenty of christianist zealotry to go around. The main obstacle to change is probably the protestant unionist faction since the Irish nationalists are left-wing and slightly more sympathetic to the pro-choice position. Albeit, only slightly.

I found Buckley to be very posturing and overly impressed with the sound of his own voice. He had vocabulary and rhetoric but he wasn’t convincing to me.

You sent me down a youtube hole which has culminated in this amazing video of James Baldwin debating William F. Buckley in 1965. Baldwin starts around 14 mins and he’s terrific.
