I finally gave up and unfollowed someone on FB- she found out she was pregnant and bitched about the high cost of everything- and while we all knew that she qualified for assistance including health care and foodstamps she swore she would never, ever take them because she was not one of “those” people.

She does. After meeting one of the husband’s family members not too long ago I know why she tried to keep this whole thing a secret and why she is so reluctant to take the food stamps.

That’s horrendous. And the stigma that people feel to take benefits they are entitled to and need is awful. Thanks, GOP.

I hope she knows that person is completely full of shit.

Welp, I am going to be the one to bring up subsidized childcare. A friend of mine just lost her husband’s income after his death. She absolutely has to keep on working but she has no one to take care of her kids. She went to the welfare department and filled out the paperwork for assistance so that she can keep on

I’m living for this convo, and I wasn’t even there. Keep going... What was their response???

We need more black believers in science.

I am so over the whole “there are no black people in Portland” thing.

Exactly. Having a kid (and paying for childcare because our health insurance is through my job and we still need my husband’s income,so we both need to work) would take us from “Earning enough to own a small home, put money away for the future, and go on a carefully-budgeted vacation every year” to living basically

The horrible part is that parents are paying these huge amounts of money for mid to high quality childcare programs, but the providers working and taking care of their kids are often paid minimum wage or only slightly more. The only place folks consistently make decent wages in Early Childhood Education is in wealthy

It’s true. It’s nature’s way of keeping them alive.

I’m almost embarrassed to say how much I pay for excellent childcare. $1900 per year and that includes 2 healthy meals and 2 snacks per day. This is in the most socialist part of Canada where taxes aren’t the enemy.

Agreed. If people actually READ the statement the bookstore put out, it’s totally fucking reasonable and something I’d think most people here would agree with. Jez cherry-picked some hot takes without context and put a shitty mocking tang on the whole thing (and most of the comments reflect that attitude). Like, the

Kids are way too expensive. I can barely take care of myself and my petty wants.

I don’t understand all the snark here? In Other Words is a feminist community center that is fighting for the same issues that Jezebel commenters usually seem to agree with. While I admit IoW can be a little over-enthusiastic in its idealism sometimes, their hearts are always in the right place and they are really

Well if you’d come here 15-20 years ago and were in the neighborhood where this bookstore is located you would have seen quite a few more. Alas, they have mostly been priced out to the suburbs now.

Or maybe they have better things to do--like running a niche business in an already struggling industry--than go over however many seasons of sketches there are, documenting instances of lazy-ass, Fred-in-Drag-Gag, punch-down humor in order to justify themselves to some alt-weekly.

I think they were upset tha the BLM sign was removed so it wouldn’t be seen on the show. They also state BLM Portland also meets there regularly, and are also reminding people of the historic racism of the Oregon and Portland in particular. Oregon was formed to be a “white utopia”

Sex dwarf seems to be a dangerous occupation.
