California has banned (or at least voluntarily replaced) road salt with alternatives. Too much vegetation being burnt be the salt. I believe they use sand/grit and beet juice.

It’s also doing numbers on the ecosystem and the ground water. I lived in Siberia for years and they would laugh if you told them you put salt on the road. So irritating. My new favorite part of all these “bros” is the trend of putting aftermarket LED headlights in halogen housings. They light up everything but the road. Oh, and they have to put them in their fog lamp housings as well and drive around shining with absolutely not one patch of fog.
