Problem is there are very large bodies of water to cross (e.g., oceans). Plus infrastructure costs related to building out high speed rail and maintaining it.

You buy the wagon to enjoy the sport sedan handling and decent MPG when not hauling anything, which is the majority of the time.
Subaru Outbacks are a dime a dozen in the Pacific Northwest, so there is a market for wagons in the U S. in certain regions. Not sure about a $100k plus wagon, although extremely awesome. I picked up an S4 Avant 6-speed earlier in the year at a local dealer. Get compliments on it all the time by random people.

The $800 likely included labor. Usually the parts for German cars are not that more expensive. An OEM door lock actuator for my Audi A4 was $150 and not hard to install.
The primary reason to go with one of the German luxury SUVs is if you care about handling. This is something that cannot be matched by the full-size domestic models.
