"Core" counts in SoC GPUs mean as little as stream processor counts in desktop GPUs, the performance can vary by several times over. Look at the eight "core" Tegra 3 GPU vs the SGX 543MP2 or MP4 with only two or four cores.

Doesn't this happen every new OSX release? I think the culprit last time at least was that OSX re-indexes everything after an upgrade. After a few days that should settle down.
