You are looking at this logically. Clearly that’s not the Maryland way. If you are committed to a culture of toxic masculinity as Durkin clearly is, these actions make a twisted sense. 

I think what you are missing is the ice bath at Maryland is a 10x10 pit with a 20 foot drop to the water level.  See?  He might have drowned.  No way you could put him in the ice bath and hold his head above water.  

I guess it’s harder to pretend that you weren’t responsible for a drowning than it is to pretend you weren’t responsible for death by heatstroke.

None of this would be justified by Maryland being a good football team. I don’t mean to suggest that winning makes torturing players okay. But I’d understand that there are enough assholes out there that might think this way.
