Back in my undergrad (we’re talking 2004 here), I lived next to a guy who was an extra in The Emperor’s Club (2002). His remembrance of his experience was, “Everyone on set was super cool. Except Emile Hirsch. Total Asshole.”

To be fair to Hirsch, he did this back in 2015, when we didn’t know it was wrong to choke a woman out at a party and never apologize for it. Is it fair to judge historical figures by present-day standards?

I was in Vietnam a couple years ago. My girlfriend and I had just arrived in Hanoi on our first day in the country. Cruising Instagram in the hotel room as we get ready for the day we notice from Bourdain’s feed that he’s staying at our hotel.

Tony’s ability to be both humble - in admitting mistakes and also teaching us and showing it in himself that part of travel is LEARNING and LISTENING - and irreverent (for lack of a better term) is what I found most amazing about him.

There are dozens of men commenting on Asias Instagram blaming her for his suicide, because she posted a photo walking with another man. Seeing that really put me over the edge.

This is exactly how I feel. I haven’t followed his career enough, or watched his shows nearly as much as I should’ve, but I’ve followed him on Twitter recently, and he’s been such a vibrant, strong, positive voice through the garbage. It really hurts to see this happen.

Are you always this tiresome? Sizeist? Give us all a break.

My first denial-stage reaction was that Tony was extremely critical of Putin, in Russia, and that someone should make sure Zamir Gotta is okay.

.... no. Don’t go down that path. Come on. Bourdain was a damn minor bit player in the entire #MeToo movement.

I immediately thought about that episode too, which was one of my very favorites. It came at such a crucial time, and it was like this little beacon of hope. Anthony’s style of interviewing - which was really just a warm, honest, conversation over good food, brought out the best in Obama. He was such a talent, and

I’ve read every one of his books, including the cookbooks — and he always wrote good apologies in his post scripts when he changed his views on something he’d written earlier, which is one reason I think people liked him so much. I loved his work and persona, and this loss really hurts. I feel for his family and loved

Bourdain was an advocate for women. He also used his platform to give a voice to the largely brown and Spanish speaking staff who make up the backbones of our restaurant industry.

I just want to thank Megan and Jezebel for this headline. So many news agencies this morning got this wrong when they put “suicide” right in the headline, and many then referenced suicide right in the article, multiple times.

Suicide rates are rising in the US and it’s contagious.

Seeing these uber successful people succumb to this shitty affliction makes me wonder how I can maintain the strength to carry on. Right now I’m not in that state of mind, but I’ve been in it before, and I’ll certainly be in it again; that’s just how it works. Just know you’re not alone and there are good people out

This is so fucking sad.

Oh my god I am shattered by this one. :((((((((((

Terrible, terrible news. Bourdain is one of my pop culture faves. Such a unique voice. I never get tired of his takes or his adventures. I’ll miss him very much.

What the hell is going on.
