what's really scary is how well conditioned we are now to accept that as reasonable force. that's just the times we live in, right? cops gotta have armored vans, tanks, swat teams, assault files, armor that exceeds armor our own soldiers have for actual combat. totally normal.

Or even just talk him down. There's very little emphasis lately on connecting with a criminal, especially someone who's clearly not sober or mentally healthy. The de facto response from the police of late is "assume they have a gun and want to kill you". Oftentimes you can simply calm someone down by talking to them.
