Yeah, I had crappy teachers. They allowed the coaches at my high school to be teachers. One just showed "Saving Private Ryan" every week. I will definitely check this out. Thank you!

You can't blame kids too much for not being interested, some of the responsibility for that lies with the teachers. It's never too late if you want to learn. There's a show on NPR called Backstory that's amazing for this. I listen to it just for fun, they make topics from history really interesting. It's not about

Yes, exactly. I wasn't arguing that any of those classes were useless, only that they were ultimately unimportant to me. =)

I absolutely agree, from sophomore year of high-school I had many "electives" that allowed me to explore my interests as well as push myself towards my future career. I know this is not the case in every high-school but it should be, it promotes self management, and planning as well as forces students to make choices

Yeah- the point of education is missed on many. I can't decide if it's that they internalized everything so well that they don't even know when they're using the knowledge and skills we gave them, or if they had teachers that just didn't help them see the real-world connections, or perhaps both.

A general, very applied high school course on the scientific method and using critical thinking skills to evaluate information would go a long way towards helping people deal with the kinds of topics you mention here, without ever having to sit through World History 1, 2, and 3.

At same time the knowledge that is useless to you might be useful to someone else, like me for instance being an engineer I use all that math all the time. That being said I don't use my knowledge of poetry on a daily basis.

My only real beef with the dress is it took attention away from the much more deserving runaway llamas.

Why is your mustard black?

You're parents thought they were doing the right thing by praising your intelligence. And you probably were and are smart. It's just that not everything in life can come easily. Finding that came as a brick wall for you. It's good you're able to turn it around.

Agreed. Now if you'll excuse me I need to take my vaccine-free children to deny climate change and protest equal rights because that's always worked in the past... at least I think so... I don't remember history.

We don't teach history to help you get a job, we teach history because without it people grow up to be ignorant jerks who deny that things like slavery and the Holocaust ever happened.

I got the "you're so smart!" shtick from my parents when I was little. Very heavily. Early—very early—childhood intelligence tests, high achievement in school. Honestly, I probably was pretty smart. But then I started to bump into the spots where I actually had to try. It was incredibly frustrating and I ended up
