Now playing

Everybody’s going to Mario or bread, but my old ass immediately thought of George Gobel sitting next to superstars Bob Hope and Dean Martin on the old Carson show and SLAYING them with one line. ‘You ever think the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?’

“When Will My Life Begin” is on my daughter’s playlist, and it comes up all the time, and I never get annoyed in the slightest. Great song.

I’m sorry, but what needy, privileged BS to be so put out and annoyed by someone who dares to want to get you something you’d like or use. My mom asks us this same stuff every year, every year I tell her she doesn’t need to get us anything, but she wants to give us a gift. She will choose herself if I don’t give her

like Attack the Block, but for lesbians*

I know it’s funny to snark on this situation, but I’m related to two immediate family members who are mentally ill but do not fit the strict legal criteria for involuntary treatment and/or commitment. (I suspect that’s the case with Petrie-Blanchard.)

Oh, you think you’re so pretty...

Yeah this isn’t new. A rock star in a dress *gasp*!

Same, I really absolutely loved it. As an Oaklander I’m always gonna pull for anything starring The Town heroes Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, but beyond that it occupied that enjoyable niche of “Violent and Righteous Nouveau-Western.” I thought I’d get tired of Ethan Hawke screaming every 5 seconds but I made it all

This one’s kind of all over the place, but here are the greatest hits:

I think that last paragraph is the crux of the story - if the guy was using the word correctly, he was still dropping a homophone for a racial slur to illustrate a point. That isn’t the same as using a racial slur, and it doesn’t make the word a racial slur. But his students made him aware that it sounded like he was

Cancel Culture is one of those phrases people throw out like they’re reacting to mommy trying to get them to eat their veggies.

Matt Taylor is still employed with the European Space Agency and Justine Sacco was fired for her public racism, but then got a job doing press for FanDuel and eventually got brought back in to the same company she was initially fired from.

Also, dude was suspended after his students went to the dean. I like how the definition of "cancelled" is broad enough to include temporary disciplinary action handled through normal workplace channels.

The students said some of them had voiced their concern to Patton during his lecture, but that he’d used the word in following class sections anyway. They also said they’d reached out to fellow Chinese students, who ‘confirmed that the pronunciation of this word is much different than what Professor Patton described

Maybe he can show how just about nobody has ever actually been “canceled” by cancel culture.

I’m glad Fincher was specific. If anyone can find an example of “a truly heartfelt apology and no one believes it”, I’d love to know.

The more accurate way to explain Cancel Culture is the following: Actions have consequences, particularly if you are bigot.

Steamed fraud?

“There are stinky farts on both sides.”

It’s a shame you don’t really seem to be enjoying the Good Lord Bird all that much Eric; personally I have found the disparate tones have been enjoyably juggled; sometimes the balance has been a little sketchy but on the whole I’ve found it a refreshingly original diversion.
