To clarify, they cut the wages of people working a retail desk where they sold the packaged beer. Who tips when you go to buy packaged beer? That was the big problem. If they are bartenders or some other service folk then it might make sense, but saying they are “tipped” employee working somewhere no one gets tipped…
Well, they were making that wage plus tips, so it’s not on-face illegal.
From $8hr to $5hr is not right and it’s below the federal minimum wage of $7.25hr. As a small businessman it sounds like a chicken shit thing to do. Sounds like they did because they thought they could and that it’s not really a financial decision.
I don’t think hoping to make a reasonable wage is, to use your eloquent term, retarded. These employees weren’t necessarily interested in opening a brewery; they’re retail workers whose pay was cut seemingly overnight.

Sadly, in any creative field (and brewing is definitely creative) people take advantage of worker desire to be part of the industry in question and lowball their wages.
