You know that laugh that you get like once every two years or so, when you laugh so hard that you literally break down and can't breathe? I can't say I "liked" her, but I always appreciated how believable she was. She was written well, and to this day, I'm still a bit surprised by the hate. It kind of reminds me of the Skyler White hate from Breaking Bad, in that the hate-levels are seriously huge for some reason.

Thank you! I always thought that was a HUGE hint too, especially during 316, when Hawking was vomiting exposition and lore about electromagnetic Hellmouths.

Pigpen has always been a monster.

That could very well be true, but if the Island-was-purgatory thing was real, it was changed immediately after the first run of episodes, because they were already hinting at the electromagnetism angle mid-season 1 ("Hearts and Minds") with Sayid's comment about the malfunctioning compass.
