HDR doesn't have to look ridiculous all the time. Tons of photographers use HDR to make landscapes seem real without making you want to gouge your eyes out.

I assume you're talking about the rotating monitors - yes, it is very useful. If you read up, all I've been saying is that it is NEVER okay to shoot video in portrait orientation.

Since this is pretty close to "news reporting," I'd say there is never a reason to throw away more information. Shot horizontally, the scene would've given context to the height of the fire by showing the neighboring buildings.

no, if you turn your phone sideways you can use the full resolution of the viewing screen. If you film something that is 1920x1080, you're going to end up viewing it at 1081x608 in the best case - which means you're losing a lot of information just based on the aspect ratio of the screen it is being displayed on. Wrong again. Since the video is for web, it is going to be displayed with a maximum vertical resolution of 1080. You'll get a better picture and record more information by shooting horizontal.
