There were many, many parts of Perdido Street Station that freaked me the hell out. New Crobuzon (and the horror that descends on it from above) is one hell of a creation.
I don't think they're toning her down at all. I think she looks amazing in the above picture. If they're indeed "toning her down", it's probably not because it offends people.
