You seem to be saying that people who didn’t like the film are just trolls.

io9 going to ignore that TLJ is bombing at the boxoffice and is now projected to earn less than Rogue One?
I’ve been following SW youtube lore and enthusiast channels for years, and a significant number of them definitely have issues with the film. It’s not bullshit.
I wonder if this article would have been written if this had been one of the prequel films instead...
“Don’t try to murder your pupil in his sleep. And if you do, don’t hesitate. What, are you dense? Did I really need to spell it out?”
I mean I would have been totally fine! It didn’t need to be forty years later. It could have been a hundred or, hell, even sixty. Dude it can have been a millenia before these movies.
I’m all for taking big swings and trying something new, but it doesn’t mean that it automatically works. The effort is appreciated, but it only gets you so far.
This has been my argument but no one seems to listen. I did expect a passing of the torch. I did expect pretty much everything Rob mentions here. We are not the audience, nor should we be at this point. But there is absolutely a way to tell this story without having it seem to trash the old characters and everything…
The Last Jedi is a good...movie
Yes, this exactly. You could have some new threat arise 100 years after the original trilogy not even related directly to those characters. They would have died living happy lives and yet you still have a new generation of adventures. That victory over the Empire still would have won peace for a generation. Now, it…
What gets me is I agree, you can and SHOULD create a new story that is not intrinsically linked to the old one! Star Wars should be about way more than the Skywalkers and their friends.
He didn’t change Star Wars, and he didn’t make a great movie.
Intentional or not, Rian Johnson has seriously fucked shit up. Luke died a failure, only to be reborn as one of Johnson’s new Force ghosts, with never-before-seen abilities like manipulating matter. It’s beyond clear that Johnson wanted the cachet of the Star Wars brand without any responsibility to the history that…
Another sweeping generalisation... not everyone who is disappointed in this movie is ‘a fanboy having nothing better to do’. Within my own circle of friends and family it has garnered a very mixed reaction. My own young son was very disappointed with what happened to Luke Skywalker’s story. There are very real issues…
Except people do.
Well, he failed.
God, my opinions are still so divided on that list. Is it net good or bad?
Speaking for for all the angry man-babies (as we’ve been so colorfully called)
He failed.
Except that he didn’t. He just copied a collection of scenes and plot devices from Empire and Jedi and tied them together around a boring “chase” sequence. With everyone either acting unfathomably stupidly or completely out of character throw on top.
