This is so counterproductive. The ability to maintain family ties while prison is enormously important to reintegrating prisoners back into society upon their release. I imagine that a higher recidivism rate would cost the state more money than the current visitation program.

In similar news, some prisons are going exclusively to video calls rather than visitation. So that people’s families are in the same building with them, but have to communicate through a monitor when they may be only a few rooms apart. And of course, the companies providing the video calls are doing so at a profit.
