We did astoundingly well in terms of actually waging the war and carrying out combat operations. Our military losses were very low, all things considered. Especially compared to situations like Vietnam, where military losses were much, much higher.
I’ve read a few studies that show that when you tell Americans how many soldiers died during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan it makes them support America’s war efforts more, not less. The sunk cost fallacy is a crazy thing.

As a vet myself this is something everyone needs to understand: sometimes American Soldiers die for no good reason. They die in accidents, in blue-on-blue attacks, from improper medical care, in stupid wars, in badly planned missions. It happens. “Soldiers have died” is not a reason to keep fighting in and of itself.
