I bought a 360 that has yet to red ring. Should I assume that everyone who ever did get a red ring of death must have done something wrong, or was just lying?

Come on, that’s nonsense. It’s not like people are imagining these scratches. You have a hard plastic dock rubbing on a plastic screen. That will eventually scratch your screen.

It’s a plastic screen and the guides in the dock are hard plastic. Regardless whether a large number of people have scratched their screens to date, it’s still a horrible design which lends itself to causing problems.
