I remember a short article about how it was curious that the claims about the director of birth of a nation but not Manchester, but that’s it.

the case was settled to the satisfaction of all parties and a gag order. not that that negates the newsworthiness, but i guess a settlement is acknowledgement?

If I recall correctly, a mention of Casey Affleck’s sexual assault cases was made in another post about Manchester by the Sea (and perhaps about other films as well). Jez certainly hasn’t done a full post about it, which has been surprising to me, too, especially considering the thorough coverage the Nate Parker

This article explained the whole situation pretty well:

I think that the issue is that she is crazy enough to pretend that cowbells ring at 100 decibels and weigh 13 pounds, both of which are instantly verifiable as untrue the first time you see  one.

Lol I think you’re right. What a hilarious mishearing.

That’s a very insightful observation. We all have our own frames of reference.

The law was amended recently to allow for the Canton to override the town decision but basically to become a Swiss citizen you need the approval of your neighbours.

The Swiss naturalisation process varies by community and canton. If you piss off the local community, you’re not going to have an easy time of it. Some communities do let their citizens vote, as they appear to have done here. (Some have a small committee that decides, instead of letting all locals vote.) Since their

I’m really surprised they have a problem with her noise complaints because a friend of mine used to live in Switzerland and there were by-laws (laws?) against running your vacuum or washing machine after 10pm.

Switzerland has a very arcane system for dealing with naturalization. After you’ve been there a while, your local community has to support your application for citizenship, so that 260 person jury represents the members of her community that showed up for that vote. It’s more or less a local referendum on adding a

To answer your first question: the final decision in the usual naturalization process lies with the members of the community you live in. You can only apply for citizenship after youve lived x number of years (differs depending on which community you live in) in the same community to give them a chance to get to know

Look up the Swiss Canton system. I’m not trying to be difficult but it’s complicated.

“I do wonder what kind of person moves to a place, spends a bunch of time demanding that that place change all of their traditions, then acts surprised when that place doesn’t want to naturalize them.”

On point #1, don’t go giving the Trumpenator any ideas. “Citizenship by vote” sounds like a horrible (but very possible) idea.

I can’t speak to the naturalization process, but Switzerland is very isolationist and more than a tad xenophobic. They are still part of the Schengen group, if I remember correctly, which allows Europeans living in member countries to travel freely to an from, but they are very hesitant to naturalize. I lived there in

Yeah not enough space was devoted to racing cows. Pigs, I’ve heard of. But I need to know if this a 2 cow at a time race, like a 50 yard....dash? Or a cross country multi cow race? I really want it to be the former.

I can’t answer the first one beyond saying that the government in Switzerland is super weird. It’s like the U.S. in that it’s federated, but it’s like a federation on steroids. The cantons have a ridiculous amount of power, and the composition of the national executive is insane.

I think the issue is that she’s been in Switzerland since she was 8 - so, 34 years. She might not have a lot of memories of life before Switzerland. She likely feels like Switzerland IS her homeland, so to her, she doesn’t view it as a foreigner criticizing the traditions of others, it just feels like criticizing her

there are races involving bells? Like to see which cow is fastest?
