I have a cookbook from Penscola’s Historical Society (Pensacola’s a small city in the Florida panhandle) and its recipes are sorted by historical period. The ones from the Civil War are soooo intense. No meat, no dairy, very little flour, everything made to maximize ingredients.

Might need to dust those off for Brexit.

Oh, I know! Even during prosperous times, I would hesitate to eat some foods of the past. I’m sure future generations will feel the same about our choices.

Neat article. I’ve always liked propaganda posters, since they try to influence behavior, but are very straight forward about their purpose. I thought these two were neat, 1st for juxtaposing sugar beets with fairly violent scene, and the 2nd, just in case any Jalopniks happened to view the article.

They’re pretty uncommon around here, but there’s one restaurant in my hometown that regularly features them on the menu. They’re absolutely inedible - oily, salty, very “fishy” flavor. The restaurant on the whole is pretty good, so I always figured it was just that sprats are kind of gross and an acquired taste. But

Woah, super interesting! Thanks for the link. The guilt trip is HEAVY. There’s a lot of hand-wringing about the “wasted” food and fuel on “poor” breadmaking in the home. They pretty much come right out and say that if we lose the war its your fault because you’re a shitty breadmaker. !!

Fun Fact: I followed WW2 food rationing guidelines(UK not US) for a month. It was tough, but I had loads of energy

This terrifies me. I don’t usually think about the fact that when I use Uber or Lyft, I’m getting into a car with a complete stranger, almost always a man, almost always at night. I just want to be able to go about my business safely as a woman in the world and not have to weigh the risks of mundane activities like

The Republican White House and Republican controlled House and Senate support this. Everyone going to the polls next month who votes for Republican candidates is voting to let this continue. People may say “I don’t support separating children from their families” but if they don’t vote for the only party that will put

I mean, definitely a person under 18 can’t have an abortion without her parents’ written approval but that’s TOTALLY DIFFERENT because, see, that’s a medical procedure that we need to control for her because she’s young and dumb. This is just some kid who isn’t going to see her mom and dad for another six months

Customs and Border Protection did not offer clarification on how they define “family units” for Amnesty International’s report, but called the report “not even remotely credible and should not be treated as such,” in a statement to the Intercept.

Where/when in this country do we ever allow someone under the age of 18 to sign a legal and binding contract??  Much less a five year old.  This is beyond ridiculous.

They are the monsters.

I just honestly don’t understand how someone can see that child’s attempt at practicing her letters on a legal document that keeps her away from her parents and not see anything wrong with it.

Man, I went from boy to manchild during the fourth doctor of Doctor Who. This was the Tom Baker years from mid 1970 to early 1980s. The big scarf doctor. Oh sure, the Jon Pertwee years of the early 1970s were in rerun on PBS and also influential in my formative years. Like a pile of clay becoming shale and then maybe s

“I’m not going to kill you. I’m just going to make you need the bathroom really, really bad.”

Kanye apparently unlocked his phone on live TV with a very easy to decipher passcode...not kidding.

If Kanye was just some guy on the street yelling this stuff he’d be picked up by the police in a hot minute.
