I think the author was trying to explain what it is like to homeschool and dispell some of the myths and beliefs that homeschooling is for religious, paranoid weirdos.

High school content might be beyond some parents to teach, and middle school might be iffy, but I’d gather that most parents can at least teach elementary level content (especially if you consider the fact that lessons are planned with resource materials ahead of time, not simply delivered ad libbed).
