Look at a used Lexus GX. Way more bang for your buck that the 4Runner.
The 2.4L turbo 4 will probably be fine. The reason most of their turbo engines end up needing rebuilding is because “enthusiasts” do questionable upgrades and end up blowing them.

I recently went for a fair off road adventure with my 5th gen 4R. It makes a fantastic do all, with quite a bit more space and comfort than the XJ. I loves me an XJ, but if you actually have people and their stuff, or have to haul some distance the 4R is the better choice to me.
