Lasers communicate slower than the speed of light (in a vacuum) when passing through air. The speed of light, whilst a constant, changes drastically depending on the refractive index of the medium through which it is passing.

You don’t necessarily volunteer your location if you are specifically using GPS: standalone devices keep the data for their maps onboard and solely correlate the information from the satellite transmissions and a known table of satellite ephemeris. The issue is with the phone, not the beacons we’ve put up there.

GPS (the US’s GNSS) is only a transmitted signal; our phones receive it and cross-correlate a number of simultaneously-visible signals to achieve a lock. You could turn off GPS on your phone and still be tracked as the transmitter for tracking is in the mobile device.

My colleagues see me ride in to work regularly in my riding jeans and heavy, armoured jacket. They’re delighted when I reveal that the jeans are kevlar lined and have armour in the hips and knees.
