Creating sort-of-luxury cars on Fiat plaforms is all Alfa has been doing for the past 20 or 25 years and they’re actually trying to change that with the new 4C and Giulia.
The Golf is a niche seller in the US even though it is a good car. I doubt the Tipo would sell any better.

Here’s a good way to help save FIAT; stop naming everything “500". It’s confusing, and unnecessary when overseas you already have other nameplates that work. The 124 Spider is a good first step. I’d buy a car named Panda over “500L” or “500X” any day.
