The reference-heavyness is comparable, but it’s definitely a case where the “I know what that is!” references are the actual plot of RPO and the references are just aesthetics in Scott Pilgrim (or even metaphorical for how Scott refuses to grow up and continues to live in a world colored by video games)

Yeah, there’s no failure in the W’s execution of what they were trying to do. It was supposed to be a non-stop technicolor rollercoaster vomit crazy ride. Now if you don’t think what they were going for is good, that’s another thing altogether, but they didn’t fail at their goal.

Cera is really the problem here. I have nothing against the dude, but the characterization of Scott in the comics doesn’t really mesh with Cera’s general sadsack thing. Scott isn’t a sadsack. I definitely had that thought watching the episode, but TGP did it better. Doctor Who just did it as a good silly handwavey joke, Good Place somehow did it even sillier but took it more seriously and its just a really well deployed joke and plot device.
