You have to look at car advancement through its entirety, not just MPG. MPG hasn’t really budged all that much since the Model T.

You can’t compare cars that weighed 2400lbs to modern cars. Federally mandated safety features have boated the weight of cars almost 50% since the 80s. Cars today are much more efficient and emission compliant than any car from the 80s under the circumstances.

That ‘85 Tempo only weighed around 2500lbs and just had seatbelts as safety devices. I’m ok with a ‘17 CX-9 with 7 seats, 25 airbags, ABS, collision avoidance, rear camera, and light-years better crumple zones matching the economy of a 32 year old POS.

The 34 MPG Tempo was a diesel. The gasoline engines got at most 25.
